About

Pauli Murray was a non-binary Black lawyer, poet, and priest. A recent documentary, titled My Name is Pauli Murray, highlights their work and significance in our history. The film can be watched via Amazon Video at this link.

Here is a list of highlights from Pauli's life and work:
  •  Registered at Columbia University and took classes without being officially accepted because only men were accepted at the time.
  • Graduated from Hunter college in 1933.
  • Applied to UNC before members of their race were admitted. 40 years later they offered Pauli an honorary degree; they declined.
  • Was jailed for refusing to sit on a broken seat in the black section of the bus; 15 years before Rosa Parks.
  • Graduated from Howard University School of Law.
  • Their Master’s thesis research was used by the NAACP as the basis for Brown vs. Board of Education.
  • Became a lifelong friend of Eleanor Roosevelt after writing letters to advocate for social justice.
  • First black Attorney General of CA.
  • First African American who was not a man to receive Doctorate of Juris Prudence at Yale Law School.
  • First black person who was not a man to be ordained as Episcopalian priest.
