About

Hello everyone! My name is Sonia. My priorities in life are God, family, school, and friends. I'm attending UTSA this semester to assist in graduating in May 2023 with a BA degree in Sociology. My future goals include helping Dementia patients, family and friends understand why a person's mental ability is declining and how to cope.

Remember, "The person with dementia is not giving you a hard time, the person with dementia is having a hard time." Unknown Author.

Today I visited Mrs. Julie who lives in Sonterra Heights with her daughter Inge and grandson. Mrs. Julie has Parkinson's. Mrs. Julie is such a nice lady. She had just finished eating her breakfast. She was alert and talkative. She shared her life story with me and I with her. Such a lovely lady to sit down and speak with. We talked about family, jobs, school and so many other subjects. I enjoyed my visit with Mrs. Julie and daughter Inge and will keep them in my prayers.

I volunteered at Amedisys Hospice office today assisting Vangi LaSourd, Regional Volunteer Coordinator. I helped Mrs. LaSourd and other volunteers with labeling postcards. These postcards are to be sent to their clients for their semi-annual event. I truly enjoyed my time with everyone. Our conversations were endless. I'm looking forward to my next assignment. Thank you!

Today I returned to visit Mrs. K. at Arden Park Assisted Living in San Antonio, Texas. As I walked in the door I noticed she had a visitor. Mrs. K. told her visitor, "This is Sonia. She was here earlier this week visiting." Made my day that she remembered me. Again, remember, she is 90 years. My timing was perfect, because her visitor was leaving. I asked Mrs. K. if she had lunch already and she said yes and described everything she ate. She asked me, "How about your? Did you eat lunch already?" I told her yes, right before I came to visit her. She's such a sweetie. She thank me for coming by to visit her as I had promised. I asked Mrs. K. how her day went and she said she had a busy morning. She had physical therapy today and a dentist appointment. She gave me all the details on how her appointments went. Then we started talking about ancestry, cooking, different recipes and Bobby Flay. Where did the time go I asked her? It's time for me to leave. Mrs. K. said, keep in touch. I enjoy your company and welcome you anytime. Such a blessing.

Today Amedisys assigned me to volunteer at Arden Park Assisted Living, located at Arden Park Assisted Living, 7023 W Hausman Rd, San Antonio, TX 78249 and visit Mrs. K. When entering her room I noticed she had her smart phone in her hand playing what I thought was solitaire, but she was playing Mahjong. I'm impressed I told her, because I could never figure that game out. She smiled and said, "Well, well...who do we have here?" I introduced myself and informed her I was a volunteer via Amedisys Hospice. She was extremely happy to have someone visit and chat with her. She shared beautiful stories about her late-husband, children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren and we talked the entire time I was there :) She said she was 90 years young. At 90 years, Mrs. K. knew how to use Zoom and WhatsApp when communicating to family in other states or countries. Mrs. K. is so sharp and has a wonderful memory. I thoroughly enjoyed my visit with her and asked If I could come back on Thursday of this week and she said of course! I'm looking forward to our visit.

Can-struction Event Support at North Star Mall

Can-struction Event Support at North Star Mall - San Antonio Food Bank

It's amazing what can be done with canned goods. This morning's volunteers were primarily teams of dedicated architects, engineers, and contractors as well as students from San Antonio College’s AIAS Chapter from Society for Design Administration (SDA) San Antonio Chapter. During my shift of volunteering, there was not a representative from UTSA to check in with. According to Cindy Delgado, Event Coordinator with Society for Design Administration (SDA) she said UTSA volunteers were scheduled for the afternoon, but not to worry because she had plenty of work for me to do! I'm glad I volunteered for the morning shift because they were lacking volunteers to pick up cardboard and plastic items. I pushed a huge cart collecting cardboards throughout North Star Mall and then had to dump them in the recycle dumpster located outside the mall. Made numerous visits to the dumpster. I was able to see quite a bit of amazing sculptures being built from the beginning and some completed using canned goods. I met numerous SDA volunteers and can definitely see how this event will benefit the San Antonio Food Bank. By the end of my shift, my pedometer read 12,234 steps.

I volunteered at Amedisys Hospice office today assisting Chaplain Ed from 9:30 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. Chaplain Ed welcomed me with opened arms and appreciated my help. I assisted Chaplain Ed with approximately 300 service mailouts to be sent to patients. Office environment was peaceful and all other employees were very nice.
